When the Blues Come Calling, Just Celebrate the Music

What’s that? More Blues Music? Well Alright!!! As you might have learned in yesterday’s installment, the blues is alright so we shall celebrate them more! Last Sunday evening I took a trip to Durham to enjoy the Triangle Blues’ Society’s blues jam at The Blue Note Grill; 709 Washington St., Durham, NC.  This is a monthly event which takes place on the first Sunday of each month. It is a fun platform for displaying all of the areas hopeful blues talents. The Society uses this night to promote their work in supporting local blues artists.

One of the things they do is hold a competition each year in August, to see which local artist will travel to Memphis, TN to represent the area in the International Blues Competition. This event takes place each year during the first week of February. Acts from all over the world compete for recognition.

As part of the monthly jam, they host a 50/50 raffle to help fund the local winner’s trip to Memphis. While I was in the house, a familiar talent won the prize:

IMG_3306 (2)

Blues harmonica man Mark Heffington won the prize and much like the good-hearted Doctor often does, he donated the winnings to the overall cause!

The jam itself is well-organized and everyone seems to rank on the professional side of the sounds. Each band formation offered three selections before new members came calling.

All of the formations boasted talented players and some combinations offered unique flavorings, such as three rotations in we are treated to what I deemed the cello blues band complete with horn and harmonica!

With so many familiar faces and amazing talents on stage, it was a great night that the entire crowd enjoyed. If you would like to check out the Triangle Blues Society’s Monthly Open Jam hosted by The Herded Cats a talented group featuring Sallie Gossett on Vocals, Art Champagne on Guitar, Robert Humpreys on Saxophone, Herb Shelly on drums and Anne Shrago on bass. Be sure to catch them in action again next month
at The Blue Note Grill mark your calendars for June 3rd meet me there!

The Blue Note Grill is a great venue to enjoy delicious food, good service and the best in blues music. You can find the supper club on Facebook here:

So You Want to Build A Band

Shining a Light on Artist Development

IMG_3364 (2).JPG

Fairlight Moriah has been working hard on finding players that will blend with her style for the many gigs she has coming up on the calendar.  It seems easy enough. Pick up your life and wander halfway across the land and rebuild yourself in a town full of strangers, but big on love for music and the musicians that bring it! That is pretty much the script for Fairlight’s life these days.

Things started to come together which helped her settle her soul in the critical thinking bible belt. That in and of itself has been a task for the free-range thinker and spiritual healer. She is what some devoted Christians might call a heathen. But that is never her belief and really, she is as loving and true as a person can be. In my world shows she is a child of God with blessings to share with the world.

Beyond music, she has gifts of healing and spiritual guidance. She is a creative songwriter and a dancer as well as dynamic singer who can belt the blues, scat to jazz and soar through standards like she wrote them herself.

These days she is keeping busy seeking out players to use in her Scorpio Moon project. So, to understand the direction of this band, let me point out that the talented singer was born under the Scorpio moon and she will be the first to tell you that it is an ever-changing moon. A powerful one too. That being said she is seeking out a couple of steady players to be a rotating part of her band.

Recently she made an alliance with a drummer and bandleader Freddie Scungio.  They are working things out with many area players ranging from traditional blues players to that of standard jazz players. Over the next several weeks she will be performing with many known area talents as she showcases them as well as herself.

The first show on the books is happening tonight. Fairlight Moriah and The Scorpio Moon will perform at The New Village Brewery, 702 Broad St., Oriental, NC. Music is offered from 6-8 pm and will feature the bad ass blues of Big Jim Kohler on guitar and Scungio behind the kit with Fairlight Moriah taking us home with her powerful vox!

Blues is My Bizness says Big Jim!

This event is a charitable one in support of the Arts. Here is more on that from the Facebook event:

Blues in the Beer Garden!

What better way to wrap up a day at the Art on the Neuse Festival, than listening to some soul-stirring blues with friends? Fairlight Moriah & The Scorpio Moon will perform live at The New Village Brewery, in Oriental, NC, Saturday, May 12 (from 6-8pm). A blues singer with Colorado roots, Fairlight is a newcomer to Eastern NC. Don’t miss this big blues force rocking our little village! The concert is FREE, and the The New Village Brewery & Taproom is donating $1 for every pint sold all day to Children’s Theater Workshop!”

IMG_1780 (2)

Some of the other players that Fairlight will be keeping in the rotation are her friends from The Carolina Swamp Dogs. The authentic blues trio always helps this powerful singer sound so pretty. She will be rehearsing in the coming week with these boys and Miquela DeLeon for shows coming up next Friday, May 18, 2018, at Circa 1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion. That show is 8-11 pm and free for all music lovers.

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

All that Jazz

Another thing we can expect from the diverse and talented singer is some shows featuring some standards in a show and in jazz. In fact, it was last week that we crashed at my friend Margaret Rose’s house. The pianist once kept busy with Harbour Jazz but the trio has been silent for some time. The players get together for the community events, such as “The Follies

Knowing their potential I brought Fairlight long to meet Rose, and her friends, Bob Dumon on trumpet and crooner Ann Sorocki. It wasn’t too long into rehearsal before Fairlight joined in and wowed the room of spectators. Before the night was over the quartet was committed to working on bringing music to our community later in the month. They will perform at Fairfield Harbour for a residence the only event taking place at Red Sail Park on Sunday, May 20, 2018, for a picnic in the park.

More Blues Music Well Alright!

Did Someone say Swamp Dogs?

Being a big fan of the blues, it seems only natural for me to be drawn to the stylings and flavors of The Carolina Swamp Dogs. They are a trio of retired Marines that go deep into the roots of the music form. Digging up the souls of Howlin’ Wolf and making Muddy Waters proud, this trio is based out of Jacksonville and enjoy playing festivals and private functions most of all.

Tonight the band is performing at Huffman Vineyards, 221 Haw Branch Rd, Richlands, NC, tonight with music starting at 5 pm. There will be a pig for picking, wine for tasting and staff will be looking for customers to appreciate all day as they celebrate their Customer Appreciation Day!

The band is also a feature in this month Folks Journal which will host a release party in New Bern tonight at the Brown Pelican! Be sure to pick up your copy before they run out!

Happy To Be Hell Bent on Adam Hill

I met up with many friends on Thursday night to enjoy the sounds of one unplugged yet fierce Adam Hill, who played a three-hour show is the bar at Village Steakhouse & Pub, located right on Highway 70 East in Goldsboro, NC. Besides serving up the finest in filet, the venue offers a fresh salad bar and many food specials. On Thursday nights you can enjoy live and local music from the bar.

Some of those in attendance included Feral Cat Kimberly Kornegay, who dined with me and Chris and Laura McCallister, of Mimic Band and Second Helping fame. In fact, the latest news is that Adam Hill Band will be logging some road time this summer, with several shows on the books for the band to open shows for Second Helping. They are 10 piece band based mostly out of Lenoir County offering tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. AHB and SH will log miles together in July as they hit the road for points south. More on that in the weeks ahead!

For those looking to fill up on Hill tonight head to the coast and look for him live at Tight Lines Pub & Brewing Company 709 Arendell St
Morehead City, NC. Music is served from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Come get rocked by this serious stringer with gripping chops and awesome original works!

Local Artist Opens for Legend in Wilmington, NC on Wednesday, May 9, 2018

DSC00316 (2)

Randy McQuay Sets the Stage to Welcome Blues Lovers

If life is about the highlights, then this is might be the blues highlight of the year for Randy McQuay. A talented stringer and singer that offers an authentic dose of delta blues, while paying homage to the greats, including the man he opened for when Blue Bus Entertainment brought a lesson, in the blues to Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, Wilmington, NC on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. He closed out his set paying tribute to the man who would grace the stage after him, legendary bluesman Buddy Guy. He offered a beautiful rendition of Guy’s “Feels Like Rain.”

McQuay is a blues player supported by the Cape Fear Blues Society. Last year McQuay won the local challenge to go to Memphis for the International Blues Competition and came home a winner of that competition as well. Since then life has remained busy for the blues stringer, who is married, in love with his life and expanding his repertoire by adding fatherhood to the journey.

To keep up with McQuay you can find him on Facebook by checking out this link:

For those that are not connected to Facebook, check out the area blues artist by visiting his website at:

McQuay keeps busy around the Wilmington area and ventures to points south. If you like delta blues, you will enjoy this guy a lot.

For those looking to get a little of this artist, you can catch him live at Waterline Brewing Company, 721 Surry St, Wilmington, NC. Music is offered 8-10 pm this evening!

Excitement Sets In Anticipation Builds

And Then the Stuff that Legends are Made Of

DSC00347 (3)

Just moments after the opening act cleared out and a following a few minor tune-ups, Buddy Guy and the Damn Right Blues Band came to call with one of Guy’s signature songs,  “Damn Right I Got The Blues” which I captured on film for my readers.

Buddy Guy, Damn Right I Got the Blues

Throughout the week, I have been telling everyone that I was either going to see or just saw BUDDY GUY. The only thing that stumps my enthusiasm is when someone says, “Who’s that?”

DSC00371 (2)

My goodness!!! Are you kidding me? Do you have some time to go back to school? I’d love to teach you a thing or two. I mean seriously, let’s talk.

Buddy Guy is a living legend in the blues world. There are not many left, in fact, he is definitely the last of the greats that this heart has loved. I learned his name when I fell in love with the Rolling Stones. It was in the middle of an interview on the radio with Keith Richards that first brought my attention to the slaying ax player! If I was to guess, I would say that was about 1981. I was 12 years old!

Following that introduction, I got my hands on some old recordings from the mid 60’s that featured the duo, Guy with Junior Wells. Those cassette tapes were my introduction to the blues and I was captivated. I was 13 and was still unaware that Stevie Ray Vaughan was getting ready to woodshed my soul! Here on Wednesday night, we saw Buddy Guy in his element, at his podium, poised and telling the crowd about his education in music and even gave a mention of his friends, The Rolling Stones while educating us all on the history of his journey.

I would first come study Guy closely during my days as a national blues reporter, just before the release of  “LIVE! The Real Deal!” A live release featuring Guy with GE Smith and The Saturday Night Live Band. When my editor told me, I would be sitting down to meet Buddy Guy at a hotel in two weeks, it took about both weeks for me to contain myself enough just to do the interview. It was definitely one of the great highlights of my journey through the blues as a reporter. Back then he was eager to share stories of the greats he came to know on stage.  And we covered them all like he still does today from the stage!

Some of my fondest memories of this blues player are 22 years old and probably well faded into the mind of this amazing man, but for me, they burn like visions of yesterday. This man sat down and spoke to me for 40 minutes in the lobby of a beautiful mid-town hotel and shared moments of his life with me and two of my friends.

Two months following that interview I would experience Buddy Guy live for the first time at Tramps in New York City. Again, these are moments that won’t ever leave my memory. I had media access and took advantage of crossing the line to get as close as I could. He was 60 years old and I was 27! I stood there in awe all night, especially when he walked through the crowd, stopped and addressed me with a sweet loving greeting! Not much has changed over the years, as I stood there again in complete amazement by the sights and sounds I was witnessing.

Through all of the moves and changes that life has thrown at me, I never lost sight of that tape or the words Guy shared with me that day. In fact, anytime I ever wanted to give up on writing and all of my dreams of capturing the stories of great music makers, I would take that tape out and restart my dream engine.

He told me about his days in school, and how different it was back then when he lived in Louisiana. We talked about how parents raise kids today and how kids report parents for bad behavior! He admitted not being a very good student and confessed how he never even learned to read music.

He preached a little about how he never gave up on playing and confessed how much life changed for him after he received a call from his friend Eric Clapton. “I know I was thinking about putting it down for a minute but then, that’s when  Eric Clapton called and invited me to be a part of his 24 Night at Royal Albert Hall. That phone call changed my life.” Guy recalled. Following those shows, Guy would return ready to set the world on fire with his blues and his career has been on GO ever since! He would sign to Silvertone Records and release some of his greatest works! I can’t wait for the next one!

Steadfast in tradition, Guy still takes the time to walk through and play to the crowd. He still does this during another staple song,  the title track from his 1994 release, “Slippin’ In”

If you really don’t know Buddy Guy, or if you know who he is but still have yet to experience him live, please check out his upcoming dates and go see this man perform. He will turn 82 in July and still offers a fierce and fiery show that should be experienced by all fans of music. For it is the blues where all music is based, and this man is the finest professor out there today!

Down East Fok Society Presents

Guitarist and fingerstyle champion, Christie Lenée will be performing tonight at the
Unitarian Coastal Fellowship,1300 Evans St, Morehead City, North Carolina. Music will be offered from 7:30 -10 pm. If you missed her in New Bern last night and have other plans for this evening, please note the entertainer has a couple more show around the state. To help you learn more, here is what I found on her website:

“This unique guitar work is often compared to Michael Hedges meets Joni Mitchell and Dave Matthews, delivering profound instrumental compositions with heartfelt, consciously uplifting songs. Christie Lenée’s pieces have been showcased at the NAMM Show in Anaheim in Nashville, live on National Television and Radio, on stage with artists such as Tim Reynolds (guitarist for Dave Matthews Band), Andy McKee, Amy Ray from the Indigo Girls, and Stanley Jordan to name a few. Her album “Live at the Hideaway Cafe” was one of three finalists for “Best Album of 2014” (Indie Acoustic Project Awards), including the song “Love Who You Are” nominated for a 2016 Posi Award in the category “Songs for Personal Transformation.”

Christie’s newly released album “STAY” is a collection of hopeful, inspiring songs featuring special guest Tim Reynolds on the title track “Stay,” “Sun Shines Through” and “Journey of My Own”. The album also contains 3 instrumental pieces produced by the legendary and Multi-Grammy Award Winning Producer Will Ackerman (founder of Windham Hill Records). These glorious instrumental pieces vary, from “Soaring Over Glacier Bay” with 27 cellos and a symphonic essence, to “Sunset Rebirth” with a bamboo flute, and the simplicity of “Sweet Little Piece” on the 12 string Soprano Veillette Guitar.

The title track “Stay” shines a bright light on suicide awareness and prevention. Christie’s message is that every person is special and has something unique to contribute to this world. “I intend to translate to the listener that it’s okay to go through rough times. In those moments when you feel like running… whether from a job, a relationship, or running from life itself… Take a breath. Stay, and know that there is another way. You’re the only one who can be you.” – Christie Lenée

The new album “Stay” was released on October 1st and will be followed by expansive touring in the US, Australia, Asia, Canada and Europe in 2017.

Weekend Warriors Will Enjoy the Dance

On The Scene with Tracey Stones

I sure hope everyone had a great week, one that met your needs and offered growth and goodwill. I spent the start of last weekend running around town. It was a good night to stay close to home and there was lots of entertainment to enjoy!

A Family Reunion Was Music to Wick’s Ears!

My first stop takes up The Brown Pelican. where I caught Wick Wickline jamming with the Germann Family.

He joined a trio of brothers front and center for at the Dirty Bird a fun night of memorable music-making. The crowd thoroughly enjoyed their music and even danced to the beats throughout the night. Interesting to point out, the quartet of rockers never jammed together before last week and they only had time to fit in one rehearsal before showtime.

It was an impromptu gig which came complete, improvised rhythms and off the cuff jams. Most impressive about any band to me is the original works, so when they offered a few originals too, I was truly impressed by the skill and musicianship I was enjoying. With one of the brothers living in a different location nowadays, that being guitarist singer Jonathan Germann, who lays down his jams and rests his hat in Colorado. He arrived the night before the gig. His brothers Cameron joined in on keys and Jason held down the backbeat behind the kit and Wick Wickline gave up the bottom on bass, as they jammed the crowd right int the weekend.

When not cutting the grooves for good brothers, he is found on stage with his local music brothers Josh Overby and Mike Lancaster. That trio rocks under the domain of The BiPolar Express, where you can get your prescription refilled.

Classic Rock Come Calling at Circa 1810 with The Roman Sams

The Roman Sams returned to Circa 1810 Bar and Restaurant at the Harvey Mansion last Friday. They are such a fun band to go see, anytime you are in the mood to dance to the classics you love. Whether it’s 60’s classic rock or more current 90’s favorites, this band has your back.

Samantha Holland is a skilled vocalist that can cover anyone from the range of Janis Joplin to Pink. She is also backed by some great players, including Jasmine Best, behind the kit, Phillip Alcock on bass and harmonies, Matthew Hart helping on vocals and offering great guitar work, and David Brown giving up more vox and guitar skill.

To keep up with the band you can find them on Facebook by following this link:

Saturday Night Sizzles at the Shore

Generally and as a rule, I try to mix things up each week by heading out-of-town to see who is playing around other parts of this beautiful state. Last Saturday brought me to the Crystal Coast where I checked in with a trio of acts.

Davy Dazzles The Pirates

The first place I stopped was The Royal James Cafe, where I checked in with the talented six-string player Davy Williamson. When not out touring as a freelance player, Williamson is happy to play around the popular shore spots found along the Carolina Coast. He is a seasoned player that keeps busy hustling his songs. If you are looking for a fun acoustic act to enjoy this weekend, you can find Williamson back at the Royal James Cafe tonight from 9 pm-12 am. The RJC is located at 117 Turner St., Beaufort, NC. Tomorrow you can catch the singer live at Outriggers 21, located at 2004 NC Highway 172 Sneads Ferry, NC. He will be serving the sounds from 7-10 pm. On Sunday he will offer his music and talent to folks that gather at The Swansboro Yacht Club, 126 W Corbett Ave., Swansboro, NC. Music plays from 5-9 pm to close out your weekend of music by the sea with Williamson.

Familiar Crew at Cru Bar

Just across the way I had the pleasure of checking out Spencer Scholes, who was rocking The Cru Bar and Wine Store The Beaufort Coffee Shop, 120 Turner St., Beaufort, NC. Since Ash Harell arrived, The Cru Bar has been a welcoming spot for music makers. She offers live music each Friday and Saturday night and offers an open mic twice a month, which is hosted by the lovely and talented Tiffany Elaine.

If you have not checked this place out yet, you are missing out. Come for wine and stay for the music. Stop in for coffee and dessert, and dance the night away. Looking at the entertainment on tap in the days ahead, you can find New Bern’s own, John Van Dyke center stage tonight as Madame Z. It is a fun time drag show and dance party with the good times starting at 9 pm and wrapping up about 1 am. There is a $5.00 cover at the door which opens for seating at 8:30pm.

Tomorrow night you can enjoy the tall on talent, Hank Barbee and the Dust Parade. Here is more on that from the FB event:

The Dust Parade, Sat April 28th, 8:30-11:30 pm, No Cover but $3-5 suggested donation towards the band is greatly appreciated
Hank Barbee is an original singer-songwriter-musician, who has a bluesy soulful feel.
His latest project, The Dust Parade, an original music group from the coastal nether-regions of Eastern North Carolina. Theirs is a unique style of blues/surf/jazz-improv expressed through and expanded over catchy songwriting. Their sound is dynamic. Infectious. It’s entertaining and unpredictable, for all involved. It’s not “jam” and it’s definitely not jazz. It’s just music. Incredibly good music. Made in America with 100% heart.
Conceived in the solitude of a quiet bedroom during the lonely late hours of the night. Guitarist/singer/songwriter and self-proclaimed “clueless leader,” Hank Barbee writes and writes. The ideas flow down from the heavens. There are no rules there. No parameters of genre or prose. Simply melodies and a sparsely sketched canvas of mood and message.
In the winter of 2016,
Hank began to jam with bassist Matt Henderson, and the two even did a few shows. There was a chemistry. In early 2017 Barbee called up a saxophonist he was pleasantly acquainted with named Jim Durham. Hank asked him to sit in on an upcoming show. More chemistry. After several months of trial and tribulation, the trio is gifted with the awesome soul of drummer, Logan Watson.
It’s now 2018 and the new songs and sounds are rolling out. Band practice is the highlight of the week. Creation is empowerment and love, and a reminder that we were all created by something bigger. Therefore, we in turn must create.
This sound. It makes people happy. It makes the girls wanna sway. It seems to make fans and ‘repeat attendees’. This breed of ‘bluesy island surf country bossa soul’ with that little dab of ‘beachy swing jazz’, is just the
Dust Parade that this world needs.

There is a full night of talent at Circa 1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC.

It’s been a minute since we’ve had a bill this stacked! Mark your calendars for April 27th at Circa1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion, because GEM Productions is bringing a powerhouse lineup of local music with The Oblations, Matt Phillips & James Walker. Admission is free and the music kicks off at 8:00, lasting until 11:00.

The Oblations – Carrboro, NC
The Oblations are a one of a kind two-man Blues/Funk band by Joe MacPhail (drums and keys simultaneously, vocals) and Daniel Fields (guitar, vocals). The resulting sound is that of a three or four piece, as Joe imitates a rhythm section, or plays a piano and bass part while keeping time with his feet. Daniel is multifaceted, with a mastery of both finger style and slide guitar, and a host of evolving tones. There are many genres and musical ideologies at play, but the foundation of The Oblations comes from Blues music, the first truly American musical form, and its various forms through history. Daniel and Joe tell their own stories from the thread of American music, and just like in life, the same story is never told the same way twice. They cut the difference between songcraft and improvisation, with covers from Howlin’ Wolf to Outkast. You will dance and have a fun time, and the deeper you listen the more you will be rewarded.

Matt Phillips – Chapel Hill, NC
Matt comes from a long line of southern preachers, but he left his faith behind in pursuit of a wider perspective. Born in NC to a nurse & a psychologist, his lyrics are evocative & autobiographical, alluding to American history, transcendentalist literature, & notes from psych 101. With a classic Fender & a dynamic duo of amps in tow, he sounds like an old man trapped in a young body. In his 24 short years, he’s spent countless hours in front of a crowd – from the North Carolina Boys Choir & street corner acoustic sets to session guitar work in blues, funk, and Latin music. Matt will tell you the hardest truths in the sweetest way: “I must be onto something, ‘cause I smile when I play the blues.”

James Walker
English singer/songwriter James Walker is an introspective, intelligent & enthralling performer who sings songs of love, loss, and healing.

Having extensively toured Europe as a pianist, co-writer, and collaborator for Adam Barnes. James set his sights on creating his own work informed by his experiences of love and heartbreak, to finding an identity within the LGBT+ community, to recovery and rehabilitation from a rare heart condition. James has performed over 200 shows in the past year over the UK, EU, and USA.

On the Scene with Tracey Stones

Show Tunes and Fine Dining

Last Sunday night I took the family out to Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant, to enjoy some great food from the new menu. The lovely Alisa Mike performed as we enjoy the meal and music memories made. Circa 1810 offers live music four nights a week, with Dueling Pianos each Thursday from 7-11 pm. Area bands live on the patio each Friday and Saturday from 8-11 pm and Sundays you are invited to dine and dance from 5-8 pm.

For fans of Mike, you can find her performing in the weeks ahead. She offers two-monthly Thursday shows from 6:30-9:30 pm at Live at the City Laundry. You can find her on the second and fourth Thursday of the month, offering the soul of the songs she sings.

The Treats of Taberna

One of the great things about this job is the ability to crash the private events. Here is a good example now. Last night I headed out to The Taberna Country Club. They do many events for their community members and for many months, several bands have invited me.

It was wonderful to speak with the director of the Country Club. Katie Shorter is doing a great job hearing the community and bringing them great music for fun and family enjoyment. I learned while speaking with Shorter, that they are looking to bring more music to the community. While we spoke she explained how 3rd Degree Bern came together as a group right there before the community’s eyes. It happened with a resident proposing the idea of playing there for the residents. Shorter agreed to try the idea and now it’s a monthly treat for the Country Club members.

As we can seem, this has been a great success for the members of the Taberna Community. They open the floor to the band one time each month for the dinner, dancing and a good time for all. The band will return again on March 17 to enjoy the good luck and great fun of St. Patrick’s Day!

3rd Degree Bern is a four piece band with Tom Davis and Brian Mac on vocals and guitars, Chris Morden on bass and Rich Demetre on drums. They offer the fun sounds of beach music, oldies, classic rock and shake it up with some authentic blues. Before I left, the band took me out with Buddy Guy’s “While You Were Slippin Out, Someone Else Was Slippin In!”

Pete Pawsey Played

I stopped by BrÜtopia to catch up with Pete Pawsey who was performing solo, offering familiar sounds and awesome original works to the crowd that gathered. On-site to delight, the taste buds was La Cocina Del Coqui Food Truck.

Located at 1201 Highway 70 East, New Bern, NC, this brew store has stepped things up this year and now is brewing their own batches. That was always the dream for owner Tim and I love watching dreams come true. My favorite part about this place…SURPRISE…they offer free live music each weekend from 7-10 pm, on most Friday and Saturdays. When offering sounds they pair it with a food truck to deliver the tastes and all together it is always a good time.

Tonight it is the sounds of Caffeniated Soul Boogie. This band has become a great addition to our music community and it has been fun watching it grow from a duo featuring father Derrick Moore and daughter Darra Yeager. They showed up at the open mic held monthly at Trent River Coffee Company, held on the last Saturday of each month, most months of the year. That is where open mic host, Mathew Kerlin joined the beats with his drumming additions and occasional guitar and vocal offering. Now that trio is a full band, welcominganew bass man to the line up just weeks ago.

The band has a great vibe and I love the songs they share, be sure to come out and hear them. If not this evening, then soon. For those that make it tonight here is what to hope for:

It’s your lucky day! Celebrate Valentine’s weekend with Caffeinated Soul Boogie and TataJo Food Truck at BrÜtopia. Good brew, good music, good food and good friends make an excellent combination on a cold winter night. See you there!

The Roman Sams Rocked

The Roman Sams are a great mix of musical talents and they deliver a fun and rockin’ show, everywhere I have the pleasure to enjoy them. I have wanted to see the band in New Bern for a long time and last night my dreams came true. This five-piece powerhouse delivers everything from classic rock to modern-day music that makes you dance.

Last night they delighted the crowd that gathered, under the tent at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant at The Harvey Mansion. Offering music from 8-11 pm, they gave the audience a great mix of grooves which kept them dancing and applauding throughout the night.

The band will be returning to the tent on Friday, April 20, 2018… on Friday, June 22, 2018 and Friday, September 21, 2018.

They have many shows on the books already for the music season. You can keep up to speed with the band and where they are playing by sending a thumbs up to their Facebook page found here:

Live at The City Laundry, 901 Pollock St., New Bern, NC, offers the music of the family band, Strung Together. They stay busy playing throughout the area. Singing in churches, coffee houses and on their front porch from time to time, this band is refreshing and enjoyable. Come meet George and Dare Oliver, and their talented family as they play from 8-10 pm this evening. Tickets are $7.00 and available at the door.

It is always a good rocking time when Adam Hill brings his band to town. They will be rocking my birthday right tonight, with their awesome brand of rock and soul. Come see this incredible talent and his solid band as they rock Circa 1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion. Music plays from 8-11 pm and dancing is encouraged! Leavin’ Town

Brothers Pearl will be bringing their show to Bull’s Tavern, 408W 4th St Winston Salem, NC. Music starts at 10 pm and they rock you til 2 am.

I found an open mic that is happening each Saturday in Raleigh, NC, PourWorks 900 East Six Forks Rd #120, Raleigh, NC, opens the mic at 8 pm and ask that you bring the talent to entertain. Come enjoy a beer and pack the gig bag!

Before heading out of Raleigh let me just say that Cat Daddy Groove will be giving up their show tonight at Scooter’s Bar & Grill, 1911 Sego Ct, Raleigh, NC. Music starts at 7 pm and they play til 11 pm.

Checking things out around G’Vegas, we find Steel Shot is live tonight at JJ’s Country Store & Taven, 1330 Highway 903 Greenville, NC. The Pamlico County-based duo will offer music from 8-11 pm.

The four-piece rockin’ blues band known as Built for Comfort will be rocking Market St Pub, 143 N Market St., Washington, NC. Music is offered from 10 pm til 2 am. This band offers the great sounds of standard blues music with modern rock overtones. They make it easy for dancing, come see.
