~Caffeinated Soul Boogie at BrÛtopia~

Playing sounds that are mellow and soul-searching, Caffeinated Soul Boogie is a band that has been coming into its own for a while. What started as a father and daughter duo, that I happened upon in Bear Plaza during Art Walk almost two years ago, has taken flight into a full working band, that plays not just local coffee shops where it all came together, but now they are breaking ground and playing around towns in juke joints and brew houses to crowds that welcome them.

Hot Buttered Grits Groove Downtown

The Hot Buttered Grits gave up the grooves for Saturday to friends and fans that gathered at The Brown Pelican. This jam band always draws a crowd and they always make it easy to get your groove on. I will be contacting them about dates at Circa 1810 this Spring and Summer, so look for more servings from this tasty band around town in the weeks ahead. To keep up to date with the band and all that is new be sure to like them on Facebook by following this link:

Adam Hill Band Rocked Circa 1810

As per special request, I asked the Adam Hill Band to play for my birthday and just as I would have expected, the trio of rockers brought the good time music for all to enjoy to the patio at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant at the Harvey Mansion. They opened the stage to special guests, with the drummer’s son, Macon Pittman taking the lead on guitar and vocals from time to time. They also handed a mic to Fairlight Moriah, who offered several selections including “Soul Shine” and “Little Wing”

For those looking to get their fix of AHB be sure to catch them live at The Red Room next Saturday when they rock the room from 10 pm til 2 am. There is a $5.00 music charge but the music is always worth it.

Of course, my favorite music is that which hails from the depths of Hill’s soul. He offered several of his original compositions throughout the night. Most notable was “The One”, which left me breathless and “What’s Left?”, which left me wondering. While on break I got to talking with bassman Gordy Goerge, who is putting together a new project. This band idea will turn a few things around, as it will offer George on guitar and Hill on bass. No name was given but if you keep it here, I will bring it to you as it unfolds.

Love for Local Bands

Local Band Tuesday at Live at The City Laundry

There is a great event taking place in town each Tuesday for music lovers. Local Band Tuesday is the creative work of host Parker Millar. He is working with the local venue Live at the City Laundry, to bring a night stacked with fresh sounds for locals to feast on during the mid-week hustle. Each week will offer the sounds of several bands. This weekly event allows the bands to display their music live and push product during the week. This is also a winning combination for music fans who crave their live music fix but fall short on Tuesdays!

The first band I got to check out was JIMMY. They are a young four-piece punk band with hints of old-school flair. I was impressed by the raw energy and skill of this adolescent group that comes from Farmville, NC. They will be making a return to the stage next month. Mark your calendar for March 13, 2018,. That is when you can come out to support Local Band Tuesday here in the Bern and give JIMMY a listen to live. I have it marked on my calendar so to grab a word with the lead singer and guitarist, Mark. I look forward to hearing more about the band when they return to town next month.

Sandwiched in the middle of the two bands from surrounding areas came our own local serving of Spaghetti. This new four-piece band offers rock, folk, and punk flair. I rather enjoyed the set of original works that feature guest host Parker Millar on guitar and offering some vocals, Wilson White sings and offers acoustic guitar, sister Holly Millar on bass also sings and holding things down behind the kit is Jake Ross, on drums.

The band has a couple of shows coming up next month. On March 10, 2018, at 9 pm they will be rolling over to Greenville, to perform at Pitt St Brewing Company, 630 S Pitt St., Greenville. At the end of the month, the band will be back to rocking New Bern at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant at the Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC. That show is March 30, 2018, with music offered from 8-11 pm.

Never Nauts

The Nevernauts closed out the night with a fun and energetic set of punk rock sounds. The trio of rockers hails from Fayetteville and have been busy burning up the miles while performing shows in between. For More details, here is what I learned on the band page on Facebook:

“Nevernauts is a band of artists and musicians working together to create, express, and grow. We promote positive vibes through in-your-face space-punk music, with gritty, tough-as-woodpecker-lips lyrics.  Mikka Tyler leading the charge on vocals and guitar, met Josh and Dom at an open mic night at the Rock Shop (RIP), in Fayetteville, NC. They started playing and jamming together in the summer of 2014.

That winter, Josh, and Mikka launched Nevernauts. Tyler had been working on songs for a few years, and Josh just knew exactly what kind of drums I was hearing in my head. She was going to college for science, so we’d spend a lot of time what-if-ing and wondering about different things. How do we go faster than the speed of light? What would life on other planets be like? What if there was such a thing as time tides?

We were explorers and adventurers of the imagination, and it just fit. Nevernauts. The best explanation is that “nauts “are explorers, like marinauts, or astronauts. Imaginations are infinite, but they’re also just thought, essentially, tangibly, nothing. But an absolute infinite would surely have to also encompass an absolute nothingness, and always is the inverse of never, so there you have it.

They’ve been playing shows mostly in North Carolina since the start of 2015, sometimes as a duo, sometimes as a 3-piece. We completed our first tour in the fall of 2017!! (NC>TN>OH>MO>TX>LA>FL>GA>SC>NC>VA) They had a blast, covered a lot of ground, and have been working on re-recording our old material, as well as writing and recording a new EP.

We’re about to embark on our 2nd tour, a mini-tour, a quick run down to Florida and back. To keep up with the Nevernauts like the band page on Facebook by following this link:

Rocking Around the Region

It is an evening with Dexter Romweber on tap at the Wake Forest Listening Room at Sugar Magnolia Cafe 219 S White St., Wake Forest, NC. Music starts at 7 pm and plays til 9 pm.

Here is more on the artist:

“Dex Romweber was and is a huge influence on my music. I owned all of his records as a teenager and was thrilled at the fact that we were able to play together recently on tour. His attitude towards music is remarkable. His songwriting, along with his love of classic American music from the south, be it rockabilly, country or R&B, is one of the best-kept secrets of the rock n roll underground.” —Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather)

Dex and Flat Duo Jets on David Letterman – 1990 –

Dex now with his Sister on Drums –

For a quarter century, Dex Romweber has trolled the dark corners and back shelves of the haunted thrift store of Americana ephemera and honed an extraordinarily idiomatic sound, a particular and readily identifiable DEXness for those in the know. It’s a creepy doll collection of surf, proto-rockabilly, garage, dark and vengeful blues, and nobody, but nobody plays it like Dex.

First with the legendary Flat Duo Jets and now with his sister Sara on drums, Dex distilled the punk ethos of less-is-more to the essential guitar/drums template. Left in the wake of his lecherous and slithery Silvertone guitar were early acolytes like Jack White, Neko Case, and the Reigning Sound as well as a current crop of the indie pack like Ty Segall, No Age, Japandroids, and The Black Keys. All owe an unclaimed pawn ticket of debt to his sublime and spine-tingling sound. He is a live wire back to the murky, sometimes dangerous and always unpredictable headwaters of real rock and roll. “

Tim Cifers Performs Live at Rye Bar & Southern Kitchen 500 Fayetteville St, Raleigh, NC. Music plays from 8-11 pm. Tomorrow night they open the stage to Chris Overstreet. Be sure to call your date and don’t be late in supporting the live music happening around town tonight.

Checking out some other areas we find The Grand Ole Uproar mixing things up at Pitt Street Brewery, 630 S Pitt St., Greenville, NC. Live in the backroom at Pitt Street!

The Grand Ole Uproar’s musical gumbo conjures up the Texas twang of Waylon Jennings and Doug Sahm, the electric carnival of Dylan, the improvisational impulses of the Grateful Dead, and the laid-back swampy sound of J.J. Cale, as well as many other(and older) songs and artists in the American tradition.
