NCMZ.LIVE ~ NC’s Best Source For Live Music Options and Local Band News

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

On Saturday night, it was a night full of familiar favorites. I spent some time with Aaron Davenport, who offered his acoustic set to folks on the patio at Circa 1810 Restaurant & Bar at Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St. New Bern NC, from 8-11 pm. This young man is fun and energetic and talented. He can play pretty much every genre and offers such with each show. He also writes his own songs and is currently seeking a band. Davenport is a staple on the local New Bern scene and I look forward to watching him grow into a band and expand his playing territory. If you play bass or drums and are interested in finding a new gig, find Davenport on Facebook and make time to join together in a local jam.

Every now and again, when it comes to this journey and life in general, I get the inkling that I am just a co-pilot on this music bus. God is definitely the guide. Last Sunday was further proof of this. As I sat about most of the day wondering what I might write about, I started getting a bit upset for not going out to find something new to speak of for this installment of this blog.

As the sun set, I grabbed the camera bag and headed out to see the third band, that I saw twice over the holiday weekend and to be quite honest I was so unmoved by the idea, I almost sat home. Thanks be to God, I didn’t!

Nonetheless, I headed out to check in with Dan Jam hosted by Dan Jam Phillips. This  guy is a one man band, with a lot of friends and he is the only entertainer that I know who tours around as a traveling open mic event every where he goes. I have seen him set up solo, as a duo, a trio quite often and up to as many as ten jammers on stage. I have seen banjos, kazoos, beat boxes, bongos, drums, guitars, lots and lots of guitars, like we saw on Sunday at the Harvey Mansion, when he brought his show to the patio at Circa 1810 Restaurant & Bar.

This week featured four guitars being featured on most songs and they were played by five guitarists that came throughout the evening. Steady on stage was host, Dan Phillips, new on strat, Ken Walker and also on electric Scott Carlisle with the many leads and joining the trio was Vinny Farro for several numbers and Bobby Hurff too. Simon Spalding played bass. Another first was hearing the vocal talents of one of my favorite servers in this town. I learned on Sunday night Amanda Korbee has great vox talent and is new to the stage.

I have seen some awesome talent on display with this traveling open mic gig, hosted by a guy who just loves playing. It was the first stage I heard the now Feral Cat, Scott Carlisle who always has a dose of impressive chops to share. I was also introduced acoustic players Alan Gleeson who was a part of Friday night’s jam at The Brown Pelican and Vincent Farro who joined the fun this past Sunday,

I have also witnessed many firsts and lost of amazing young talent, when a young girl came to the Dirty Bird many moons ago and took over the show with her tambourine and voice. Then this past Sunday this happened.

I was not there when she first got up to the stage, but it was not long after. She was singing when I got there and I want you all to meet New Bern resident and my neighbor in Fairfield Harbour, Fairlight Moriah. She is new to our community, relocated to the area in July from Colorado Springs CO. I am pretty sure it was divine intervention that carried me out the door on Sunday and it’s a full tank of inspiration the floated me back over the river and home again.

This hard-working woman would rather just sing the blues, but with the burdens of life and bills, she works doing odd jobs to support the dream. Since Sunday, this sweet singer’s life has changed quite a bit since she got up on stage and showed off her talents to our loving music community and she has been officially welcomed to town by our awesome music community. On Monday, Farro found her a job waitressing and on Monday Night I reached out to John Jones and asked for a spot on Music Monday Today we confirmed that event.  I have her set for that show on Monday, January 29, 2018 on 96.3 FM. Listen for her performing with Adam Hill from 8:30-9:00 AM. Over the next few weeks I will be bringing her out and about to open mic events around the state, to find her serious talent to work with and we will start that in New Bern tomorrow night at La Rosa’s Italian Restaurant Bar & Lounge 1503 Glenburnie Rd, New Bern. Music starts at 10 pm;  so come hear her and welcome our new talented star to the Bern!

Of course my first band introduction to her will be the incredible Adam Hill. I have invited her to his next band gig on the patio after December’s Art Walk and you want to be there to meet them both. That will be Friday, December 8, 2017.

The soulful blues singer is hip on Warren Haynes Music and has roots deep in the blues. She was raised by parents that were in a hippy band and she has been around music her whole life. I look forward to the days ahead and Thank God and everyone that she came out on Sunday to keep the dreams going.

Live Music Options

Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Every Tuesday evening, Isis Music Hall, 743 Haywood Rd, Asheville, NC; presents our Tuesday Bluegrass Sessions. The sessions are hosted each week by a local bluegrass musician with friends or a band. Following the host band, Bluegrass musicians from the Asheville area gather on stage to jam in an open session. Occasionally, we feature a touring band that will perform prior to the open session and help co-host the jam. It’s always a great evening of music and community. 7:30-9:30PM: Host Band : Mason Via & Hot Trail Mix  9:30 – til: Open Jam.

There is a double bill at the Garage, 10 W 7th St, Winston-Salem, NC. Music starts at 8 -pm and play til 11 pm. On the bill you will enjoy the following acts:

23031502_10155218052583137_1373357217127542742_nShiloh Hill – Layering traditional folk instruments over a rock band rhythm section, Shiloh Hill brings a smooth and infectious energy to the scene. The dance-worthy grooves mingle with hometown banjo, turning the stage into a front porch, where front man Nick Hofstetter and his wife Mamie weave stories in harmony. Their winsome, family-band style ensures great fun and even better friends.
Hardworker – Hardworker is a five-piece rock band from Durham, North Carolina. The band took its present shape in 2015 when Sus Long and Mike Conner traded in their acoustic folk duo for something a bit louder, with guitarist Danny Nowell and vocalist Alex Treyz.
Songwriter Sus Long grew up in a house steeped in the American songbook and a Bay-area high-school steeped in the Hives. She writes sad songs full of jokes and party songs about the patriarchy, drawing on influences as diverse as Billie Holiday to Jason Isbell. The rest of the sound comes together somewhere between Mike’s dense grooves, Danny’s love of overdrive, and Alex’s harmonic daredevilry.
The band’s debut LP Go Alone was produced by Alex Bingham and engineered by Mitch Easter at the Fidelitorium in Kernersville, North Carolina.

POP RECORDING ARTIST AND SINGER-SONGWRITER BRANAN MURPHY IS NO STRANGER TO THE STAGE. While in high school, Henry “Hank” Branan Murphy began writing songs and singing in his church.

By age 18, he devoted himself to a career in music and spent the next several years performing at events all over the U.S., even releasing two independent projects.

In 2011, the Louisville, GA native relocated to Raleigh-Durham, NC and began writing his own brand of “conscious pop” songs. He soon released SMPLFY, a mixtape showing off his skills as a vocalist, rapper, songwriter and producer. Piquing the interest of several record labels, he ultimately signed with Sony’s Provident Label Group.

Tonight the rock band Alter Bridge will rock the Ritz Theater, 2820 Industrial Drive, Raleigh, NC. Tickets for the show are $30 and you can get yours here: Alter Bridge Tickets

Bring a friend and join us, meet some of the founding members, and provide your input for next season’s shows. Free and open to the public.”

The final show I found for this evening is happening right here in New Bern at Grover C Fields, 2000 Dr M L King Jr Blvd, New Bern. It is a Holiday Concert with the Craven Community Concert Band. This event is free and open to the public.
